Counseling

Counseling services are offered on an individual and group basis. Substance abuse accounts for at least half of all head injuries. Family and marital relationships are often difficult following head injury. We provide counseling designed to meet the highly specialized needs of our clients. We also encourage parents, spouses, and significant others to be involved in the program in order to help in recovery and adjustment.

Group counseling focuses on self-awareness, social awareness, pain and stress management, relapse prevention, and other issues that individuals with brain injury are challenged with.

Group counseling is particularly important for improving awareness of deficits and facilitating healing and adjustment to changes.  Our Survivors Group is open to anyone who has gone through our brain injury rehab program---the group typically meets every Tuesday at 12PM at Community Transitions.  This is an important part of our aftercare as well as the brain injury support group.

Community Transitions also coordinates the Brain Injury Support Group of the Black Hills which is held at Community Transitions in the Conference Room on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:15PM and ends by 8:00PM.   This group is open to anyone in the community.

The Brain Injury Support Group of the Black Hills begins with an open forum, then the group breaks out into two separate sections: survivors and family members/support. This allows each group to express unique concerns and receive support from peers in a caring environment. For more information on the Brain Injury Support Group of the Black Hills please contact Ron Sasso at rsasso@bhws.com.
