Counseling
After a brain injury a person and their family are forced to deal with changes that create uncertainty. At Community Transitions, we provide individual, group and family counseling. Though our focus is primarily on adjusting to living with a brain injury and moving forward, we also will assist each person with dealing with the specific challenges that his or her situation presents. Depression and anxiety often occur after a brain injury. These emotional changes must be addressed carefully to insure success of each person.
Other unique challenges after brain injury include substance abuse, which accounts for at least half of all head injuries and can create obstacles for successful brain injury rehabilitation. Additionally, family and marital relationships are often strained following head injury. We provide counseling designed to meet the highly specialized needs of each person. We also encourage parents, spouses, and significant others to be involved in the program in order to help in recovery and adjustment.
Group counseling focuses on self-awareness, social awareness, pain and stress management, relapse prevention, and other issues that individuals with brain injury are challenged with.
Group counseling is particularly important for improving awareness of deficits and facilitating healing and adjustment to changes. As part of our ongoing aftercare our Survivors Group is open to anyone who has gone through our brain injury rehabilitation program---the group typically meets every Tuesday at 12PM at Community Transitions.
Community Transitions also coordinates the Brain Injury Support Group of the Black Hills which is held at Community Transitions in the Conference Room on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:15PM and ends by 8:00PM. This group is open to anyone in the community. This is part of our aftercare and outreach services.
The Brain Injury Support Group of the Black Hills begins with an open forum, then the group breaks out into two separate sections: survivors and family members/support. This allows each group to express unique concerns and receive support from peers in a caring environment.
